Good information to know:
Hypophyseal Portal Veins are different from Hypophyseal Veins
  • Hypophyseal Portal Veins aka Hyophyseal Portal System connects the hypotahlamus to the anterior pituitary, if you look at link number 4 you will see the other names...notice the world "portal" is always associated with the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary.
  • Now look at the Hypohyseal Veins, notice the absence of the word "portal" (read the first point to explain), these are known as the inferior hypohysial artery as well (compared to the superior hypohysial artery which is on the anterior pituitary gland...read following key terms below
The superior hypophysial artery is an artery supplying the pars tuberalis ,the infundibulum of the pituitary gland and the median eminence. It is a branch of the posterior communicating artery which branches from the internal carotid artery in the circle of Willis..[1]

The inferior hypophysial artery is an artery supplying the neurohypophysis of the pituitary gland. It is a branch of the cavernous carotid artery (internal carotid artery).[1]

The hypophyseal portal system is the system of blood vessels that link the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary in the brain.

  1. i'd like to point out that, unlike what this figure shows, endocrinology and anatomy professors in my university taught us over the last few weeks that the portal system of the pituitary covers the anterior, and not the neural tissue of the posterior. i'm intrigued as to where this unusual image is coming from, considering it's contrary to everything i learned this term

  2. sorry for taking long to respond, I'm actually doing research on it right now, you are definitely right about the hypophyseal portal system (circulation) going to the anterior pituitary only, however, I need to find out, if the circulation system (vessels) only physically touches the anterior pituitary :) So you will hear from me shortly, thank you so much for your post :)

  3. Ok,done researching :) the hypophyseal "portal system" is different from the hypophyseal "veins". Look closely at the pic when you click on it to enlarge it. Notice the beginning of the portal system only goes to the anterior pituitary, the hypophyseal vein/artery that you see on the right is called the inferior hypophyseal vein/artery in contrast to the far left ones called the superior hypophyseal vein/artery. I will add these key terms in the original post :)
